Simple Auto Maintenance for Restored MPGs

Simple Auto Maintenance for Restored MPGsAs we head toward summer it is smart to get your vehicle into top notch shape, as many people tend to rack up more miles during the hotter months. If you plan on driving more it is important that you are able to get the most out of your gas tank so that you donít find yourself wasting time and money at the gas pump. By conducting the following minor auto maintenances you can help ensure your vehicle is getting the best possible fuel efficiency.

Oil Change

Most cars and trucks need an oil change every 3000 to 5000 miles, or more, depending on your make and model. Oil changes are critical to engine health as they help reduce the friction that the moving parts suffer during operation. An increase in friction will mean the engine has to work harder, resulting in a decrease in fuel efficiency.

Proper Tire Inflation

If your tires are underinflated it will result in them looking flat. If deflated, the tire will cause the engine to have to work harder to make it spin. In some cases, even minor deflation, can result in a decrease in fuel efficiency of up to 25%. Check the PSI rating of your tires and then pick them up to the proper specification at your area auto shop.

New Air Filters

If your air filter in your vehicle is clogged it will prevent the correct amount of oxygen from getting into the combustion chamber where it mixes with the gasoline. Low levels of oxygen in the combustion chamber will cause the vehicle to increase its gasoline consumption to compensate. This obviously will result in a decrease in fuel efficiency.

New Spark Plugs

The spark plugs are what ignite the fuel and oxygen mixture to pump the cylinders up and down. Over time the spark plugs will become corroded, dirty or even miss gapped. If any of these things happened to them it will cause the engine to misfire. This means that they will not spark at the proper time, which will result in a waste of fuel and a poor running engine.
